The English Football League announced on Thursday that Sheffield United will lose two points at the beginning of the following season due to their failure to make payments to other teams.

The accusations are related to United's 2022–2023 season, during which the team gained promotion from the EFL Championship (second tier). The club also received two additional suspended points, which will be activated in the event that it fails to make a payment to another club. The relegation-threatened club in the Premier League said that it will not challenge the sentence and has agreed to cover the 310,455 pounds ($388,565.48) in EFL fees.

In March 2023, the club received a notice from the EFL advising them that they will be referred to the Disciplinary Commission. Before it was informed of the referral, according to United, the relevant amounts had either been fully paid, often just a few days after it became due, or had been renegotiated with fresh payment dates that were followed.

Currently the team sit at the 20th place in the English Premier League and are very much likely to fall down back to the Championship next season.

What did the EFL statement suggest about the point deduction to Sheffield United?

The statement from EFL said, “An independent Disciplinary Commission (IDC) has determined that Sheffield United Football Club are to be deducted two points at the start of the next season the Club is in the EFL’s jurisdiction, with a further two points suspended until the end of that same season.”

The statement further read, “While disappointed to have the deduction imposed upon the return to the EFL and highlighting that awaiting overdue monies from several other clubs affected Sheffield United’s financial situation, the club took the view that it was better to reach an agreement which minimized the risks of a higher deduction or further transfer embargoes being imposed, and being distracted by lengthy and costly legal proceedings. The club is now in a position to close this matter and concentrate on the future.”
