Diego Maradona: (X)
In the wake of the passing of Argentinian football legend Diego Maradona, a trial is set to begin involving seven healthcare professionals. They are facing allegations of negligence related to Maradona's care during his final days.
The trial, which will last for four months, is set to take place in San Isidro, a suburb of Buenos Aires, and will feature testimony from over 100 witnesses. This includes family members of Maradona as well as various doctors who have provided care to him throughout the years. The seven defendants faced prison time ranging from eight to 25 years if found guilty.
Diego Armando Maradona passed away on November 25, 2020, at the age of 60, during his recovery from brain surgery for a blood clot. This came after decades of struggles with cocaine and alcohol addiction. He was discovered deceased in bed at a rented residence in a prestigious Buenos Aires neighbourhood. He passed away from a heart attack, and the night nurse reported having observed some warning signs; however, he had been instructed not to wake him.
The accused to face prosecution in coming months
Prosecutors have charged these medical professionals with providing reckless and inadequate home treatment to the WorldCup winner, claiming they abandoned him to suffer for a prolonged and agonizing period before his death.
The investigating magistrate in the case has stated that each of the accused had a specific role in the events leading to the star's death. All the accused, however, deny any responsibility for what happened.
Maradona’s family is asserting that leaked audio and text messages clearly show that the star's health was critically at risk. Mario Baudry, the lawyer representing Maradona’s son Dieguito, has provided evidence.
He noted that the messages revealed the medical team’s strategy was to prevent Maradona’s daughters from intervening, as their involvement could jeopardize the financial arrangements in place.
