Ruben Semedo gets arrested for domestic assault

Early on Sunday morning, Portuguese football player Ruben Semedo was taken into custody on charges of domestic harassment. Correio do Manhã claims that the 30-year-old footballer from Al-Khor, Qatar, assaulted and imprisoned his 30-year-old girlfriend at their house.

After escaping, the woman reported that Semedo had attacked her on Saturday night and lodged a police complaint. She was hospitalized as a result of her injuries after showing up at the police station with obvious bruises. Semedo was taken into custody around three in the morning on Sunday after Vila Franca de Xira PSP detectives gathered evidence of the crime. He will appear in court on Monday and is presently being held at the PSP of Lisbon's Metropolitan Command in Moscavide.

Semedo was often arrested while playing for Villareal in Spain. After being found guilty of attempted murder and handed a five-year prison sentence, he departed the Spanish club. However, in 2020, he was able to escape going to jail by agreeing to an eight-year ban from visiting Spanish territory. In addition, he received a 46,000 euro punishment. Before his transfer to the Greek team last summer, Villarreal had banned the defender without pay and had been aggressively seeking to sell him ever since.

He would run into legal issues once again in Greece when playing for Olympiakos. He was charged with raping a young girl but was found not guilty because there was insufficient evidence. On Monday, Semedo gave evidence in court and was granted 24 hours to prepare his defense, officials said. Semedo had to spend time in preventative custody in both cases.

Semedo has had a contentious football career, which included an arrest in 2021 for allegedly injuring someone by detaining them against their will. He currently plays for Al Khor in Qatar. Several charges were brought against him, including attempted murder, although they were later dropped.
