Raphael Varane, the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star, is reportedly contemplating retirement after suffering a devastating injury just 23 minutes into his debut for his new club, Como. The French center-back, known for his illustrious career filled with titles, joined the Italian side in July on a two-year deal after leaving Manchester United.

However, a serious knee injury during his first appearance has cast doubts over his future in the game. Varane was forced off the pitch during Como’s Coppa Italia clash against Sampdoria, leaving fans concerned as he was immediately removed from the club’s Serie A squad.

His recovery is expected to take a significant amount of time. Now according to the latest reports from French outlet La Parisien, the 31-year-old is considering the possibility of hanging up his boots for good. The Frenchman has faced a string of injuries in recent seasons, which have limited his ability to perform consistently at the top level.

A career to cheer for Varane!

This latest setback could potentially bring an end to a career marked by incredible achievements, including four Champions League titles, three La Liga championships, and an FA Cup victory. When Varane joined Como, he expressed his excitement about the new chapter, eager to help the club establish themselves in Serie A under the guidance of manager Cesc Fabregas.

“I’m very happy and excited about this new project,” Varane had shared in an interview with the club’s media. “It’s different from anything I’ve been offered before, and I couldn’t wait to get started. Reuniting with Cesc, but as a teammate this time, was also something I looked forward to.”

Despite his enthusiasm for this new adventure, Varane's long-term injury could mean an abrupt end to what was supposed to be a fresh challenge. After years of battling various physical issues, the defender’s latest injury could be the deciding factor in his decision to retire from professional football.
