In their most recent game, Howe's team destroyed Spurs 4-0, but they were never able to recreate that game's attacking intensity, and a double from Jean-Philippe Mateta doomed the Magpies for the loss at Selhurst Park.

With players like Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak finding it difficult to make an impression, Newcastle managed only 0.42 xG (expected goals) and failed to get a shot on goal till the 87th minute.

Newcastle has had fewer shots on goal in a Premier League match this season than its two matches against Palace, only versus Manchester City in August (one). Howe was fundamental to his team's performance in the defeat, which all but destroyed their ambitions of making it into the top four.

The Newcastle United manager spoke to the club media as he said, "[It is a] bad day for us. I thought we were disappointing today, especially in the first 60 minutes. We were way off our levels against Tottenham and our best levels. I thought technically we didn't deliver a good performance, and out of possession I don't think it was a particularly good performance either."

The former AFC Bournemouth manager added, "I think we'll be disappointed with our performance technically today, and that's probably epitomised by the two goals where we're disappointed with how we've given them the ball in those situations and then how we defended. I think the goals sum up aspects of our performance where there was some good, lots of moments that could have led to opportunities, but we were slow to shoot around the box."

With a game remaining, eighth-place West Ham is two points behind Newcastle, who drop to seventh as a result of the loss and Manchester United's 4-2 victory over Sheffield United. Newcastle has now dropped eight of their past 11 away matches in the Premier League. This season, they have only lost four times in the league in London, with their previous two Premier League seasons being 2000–01 and 2005–06.
