Storm Darragh is expected to lash the UK, thus Everton and Liverpool's Merseyside derby has been postponed. With their much anticipated modern stadium at Bramley Moore Dock nearing construction and probably ready for the start of next season, Everton was scheduled to meet their neighbors at Goodison Park in the English Premier League for the last time on Saturday at 12.30 p.m.
However, Everton has confirmed in a statement that the match has been canceled due to the unfavorable weather. Storm Darragh is bringing life-threatening 90 mph gusts and heavy rainfall to areas of the UK, prompting the Met Office to issue its most severe red weather warning on Friday.
The statement from Everton said, “Everton’s Premier League fixture against Liverpool, scheduled for 12.30pm (GMT) today, Saturday 7 December 7, has been postponed. Following a Safety Advisory Group meeting at Goodison Park, attended by officials from both clubs, as well as representatives from Merseyside Police and Liverpool City Council this morning, it was decided that, due to the risk to safety in the local area due to strong wind gusts, and an amber severe wind warning that remains in place until 6am on Sunday, today’s fixture should be postponed on safety grounds.”
“We apologise for the inconvenience caused” : Everton
The statement added, “We apologise for the inconvenience caused and thank supporters for their understanding. Whilst we appreciate this will be deeply disappointing for supporters, the safety of fans, staff and players is of paramount importance. Information relating to a rearranged date for the fixture will be announced in due course. All tickets purchased for the original fixture will remain valid for the rearranged fixture.”
Forecasters warn of major disruption, with damage to houses and structures, including roofs being blown off and electrical lines being brought down, as the red alert is the most recent of its type to be declared after Storm Isha in January. Additionally, at 3 p.m. on Friday, the Met Office announced three yellow weather warnings for wind and rain, one of which covered all of England until 6 a.m. on Sunday.
