Real Sociedad's Martin Zubimendi is said to "regret" sticking there, but some Liverpool supporters believe they already have a superior midfield alternative. This summer, Zubimendi became one of the Reds' top transfer targets; however, he turned down a move to Anfield in order to stay at Sociedad.

The midfield player was told by the La Liga team that he would have to fulfil his own £51 million buyout clause, but it is said that manager Imanol Alguacil used charm to persuade him to stay in the Basque Country. Zubimendi seems to have changed his mind, though, after Sociedad lost four of their opening six league games. The 25-year-old 'regrets' staying at the club, according to English media, as cited by Spanish publication Estadio Deportivo.

Although Zubimendi remained, Sociedad managed to make money on two other important players during the summer transfer window: defender Robin Le Normand went to Atletico Madrid, and midfielder Mikel Merino joined Arsenal.

There are rumours that Zubimendi wants Liverpool to make an effort to sign him once more come January's transfer window opening. With nine goals as well as seven assists in 194 games for Sociedad, the defensive midfielder helped Spain win Euro 2024 in the summer. Ryan Gravenberch is still a better option, according to Liverpool supporters on social media, even if Zubimendi signs.

Ryan Gravenberch’s excellent start to the season

Having started every game this season, Gravenberch has had a fantastic start to life at Liverpool with fellow Dutchman Arne Slot. He was named Player of the Match for his efforts during their 3-1 Champions League victory against AC Milan on Tuesday night.

The Netherlands international and Alexis Mac Allister, who line up together within the Liverpool midfield, are showing to be a good combination. Zubimendi would bolster the Reds' already impressive roster if they choose to rekindle their interest in him.
