Luis Suarez pens moving message for former teammate Edinson Cavani after his retirement from international football

Uruguayan legend Edinson Cavani has decided to quit international football, which spanned 14 years. The 37-year-old had played 136 matches with 58 goals, with his last appearance coming against Ghana during the 2022 FIFA World Cup. 

Moments after the news was made public, Luis Suarez, who has been Cavani’s teammate for a long time, took to social media and posted a heartfelt message. The Inter Miami FC star’s message was moving and also showed his humane side and the respect he holds for his former teammate. 

Edinson Cavani retires as the second-best goal scorer for Uruguay in international football with 58 goals. The 37-year-old ended his stint with his national side ten goals shy of Suarez, who sits at the top of the tree with 68 goals. 

Luis Suarez comes up with an emotional post for Edinson Cavani 

Taking to his Instagram, Luis Suarez posted a long message for Edinson Cavani in Spanish. “With Sadness and joy we always wanted the same goal: for Uruguay to win and the flag to be represented well. Your name will always be etched in the history of our football and our country. Thank you for everything you did for the selection. I wish you all the best always,” he wrote.

The former Paris Saint Germain and Manchester United striker today posted a short message announcing his desire to retire from international football. “I won't take long. Today my words are few but profound. Thanks to every single person who was a part of this road over the years. I was and always will be blessed to have worn this jersey representing what I love most in this world, my country,” he added.

The prolific star also wrote “They were without doubt so many wonderful years. I have a thousand things to say, tell and remember, but I want to dedicate today to this new stage of my career and give everything I've got to where I'm supposed to be now. I have decided so step aside but with my heart still beating, as it was when it was my turn to take to the pitch wearing this beautiful jersey. Sending a strong embrace to all of my fans”
