Divock Origi's journey with AC Milan has been nothing short of a rollercoaster since he departed from Liverpool in 2022.
The talented forward first made an impact at Lille, where he signed his initial professional deal in 2012. Impressed by his potential after netting 16 goals in 89 appearances for the French club, Liverpool made a decisive move, securing his signature for £10 million in 2014.
Orogi's successful years at Anfield to slump at Milan
During his formidable eight-year tenure at Anfield, the now-29-year-old scored 41 goals and provided 15 assists across 175 appearances, contributing to the team’s success, which included winning both the Premier League and Champions League under Jurgen Klopp. When he departed Liverpool in the summer of 2022 to join AC Milan on a free transfer, fans expressed good wishes for his future.
Milan granted Origi a substantial annual salary of £3.4 million (€4 million) until mid-2026, making him the second-highest earner on the team after Rafael Leao. However, following a challenging start to his time in Italy marked by injuries, some Rossoneri supporters began to evaluate the value of his transfer in light of his performance.
Paolo Maldini, a Milan legend and former director, expressed strong support for Divock Origi, highlighting his potential to become an exceptional footballer. Maldini emphasized that Origi possesses a well-rounded skill set, including physicality, technique, speed, and shooting capabilities with both feet. Observing him in training has shown the promise he holds.
Origi made a strong impression in his debut match against Monza in October 2022, contributing a goal and an assist. His early momentum faced a roadblock as he finished his first season with Milan with two goals in 27 appearances.
To revive Divock Origi's performance, former manager Stefano Piolifacilitated a loan transfer to Nottingham Forest for the 2023/24 season. Unfortunately, Origi faced challenges during his time in Nottingham as he was unable to score in 20 league matches.
In July, Milan advisor Zlatan Ibrahimovic provided an update, stating that Origi would not be part of the first-team squad and would train with the reserves.
