As the transfer window heats up, Liverpool is reportedly close to securing the services of Real Sociedad's Martin Zubimendi, a move that has sparked significant excitement among the Reds' faithful. However, the unpredictable nature of the transfer market has led Liverpool’s sporting director, Richard Hughes, to compile a list of potential alternatives.

Spanish media outlets have suggested that Liverpool are prepared to activate Zubimendi's £51 million release clause. It is a substantial investment for the 24-year-old midfielder who has been a standout performer for Sociedad.

The Spanish international is believed to be interested in the move to Anfield, potentially joining Jurgen Klopp’s squad ahead of the new season. Despite this, Sociedad remains determined to keep their star player, having previously convinced him to reject Arsenal’s advances in January. While a similar outcome is possible, the current outlook favours a Liverpool victory in this transfer saga.

Yet, Hughes and the Liverpool hierarchy are not taking any chances. Should Sociedad succeed in retaining Zubimendi, the Reds have identified four possible replacements who could fill the void in their midfield plans.

Who are the possible replacements?

Fluminense's Andre Trindade leads this list, a player Liverpool fans might recall from the club’s interest last year. The 23-year-old is known for his strong passing and defensive skills, although he lacks Zubimendi’s prowess in aerial duels.

With Fulham also eyeing Andre as a replacement for Joao Palhinha, Liverpool must act swiftly to secure his signature. Another name on the list is Atalanta’s Ederson, a 25-year-old midfielder who significantly impacted Atalanta’s Europa League campaign last season.

Valued at £38 million, Ederson offers a more cost-effective alternative to Zubimendi, and his openness to a Premier League move could work in Liverpool's favour. However, Atalanta’s reluctance to part ways with him might complicate negotiations.

Porto's Alan Varela is also under consideration. Unlike Zubimendi, Varela is more attack-minded, with an impressive average of shots per game, though his goal-scoring record last season was modest. Finally, Wolves' Joao Gomes has caught Liverpool’s attention.

The 23-year-old has quickly made a name for himself in the Premier League since he arrived from Flamengo 18 months ago. Nicknamed "The Pitbull," Gomes’ value has reportedly tripled since his £15 million move to Wolves option.
