With Virgil van Dijk's contract expiring next summer, Liverpool's long-term status at the defence may appear questionable. The Reds have been actively searching to find a top-tier replacement, and they have a number of players highly considered.

Finding a replacement for Van Dijk would be difficult because he was a huge presence and helped Liverpool capture eight major titles under Jurgen Klopp. Now let's examine the four centre backs that the team believes could be his replacements.

Gleison Bremer is reportedly the "perfect candidate" for the position, according to rumours circulating about how busy Liverpool's sporting director has been. This summer, Manchester United and other Premier League teams expressed interest in the Brazilian, who has been an outstanding player for Juventus.

But Juventus won't part with their prize centre back for little. Bremer has a contract that runs through 2029, and his team is allegedly asking for €70 million (£58.8 million) in exchange for his services. Though the financial barrier might make things more difficult, his tremendous physical stature and defensive prowess make him a compelling possibility.

Bremer's combination of Serie A experience and elite-level defending would be an asset to Anfield, potentially aiding in the transition of Liverpool's defence after Van Dijk. He is one of those players having the physical size to succeed the Dutchman, as Galetti notes, but it is unclear if Liverpool will be willing to pay Juventus' high asking price.

Goncalo Inacio - the Portuguese Virgil van Dijk?

Sporting CP's Goncalo Inacio, the centre back, is the second player on Liverpool's shortlist. Galetti claims that Arne Slot, the manager of Liverpool, is a "big admirer" of the talented Portuguese player, who has a release clause for €60 million (£50.4 million).

At 23, Inacio is a good fit for Liverpool's strategy of putting money into talented youngsters who can develop with the team. Several elite European clubs are reportedly keeping an eye on Inacio, and there is "fierce" competition for his signing. But Liverpool might act decisively if Van Dijk decides not to stay at Anfield.
