Lisandro Martinez faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after sustaining a cruciate knee ligament injury during Manchester United's loss to Crystal Palace on Sunday. The Argentine defender was stretchered off in tears during the second half at Old Trafford, clutching his knee. Initial fears were confirmed when reports from Argentina stated that the injury was as severe as first thought.

Martinez will now miss the rest of the season, with the typical recovery time for a cruciate ligament injury ranging from six to nine months. This marks the second knee injury Martinez has suffered since joining United, having already missed a few months last season due to a medial collateral ligament problem.

The 27-year-old has struggled with injuries over the past few years, including two separate metatarsal injuries in his foot. Since the beginning of the 2022/23 season, Martinez has already missed more than 50 games due to various injuries.

I think it’s a bad situation: Ruben Amorim

After Sunday’s match, Manchester United's head coach Ruben Amorim spoke about Martinez's injury, acknowledging the severity of the situation. "Licha is really important for us, not just as a football player, but as a character, especially in this hard moment. Now it’s time to help Licha like he’s doing for so long," Amorim said. "I think it’s a bad situation, let’s wait to assess things with the doctor but I think it’s a serious situation."

With Martinez out, United’s only other left-footed centre-back option is Luke Shaw. Shaw, who has recently returned to first-team training, hasn’t played since February 18 due to injury issues, and his return to the starting lineup is being carefully managed.
