On Monday night, Matchday 30 saw struggling Villarreal played host to Atletico Madrid at the El Madrigal. Because of their respective reputations, both teams have endured a dismal start to the league season. The game's outcome was determined by Madrid's substitutions, which also produced a spectacular winner.

After the game's third goal, the yellow submarine proved to be on the back end and were not able to accomplish much. Atletico Madrid won 2-1 in the end of the match and would be the happier team today. Let's take a deep look on how the players performed in the clash between Villarreal and Atletico Madrid.

Ratings from the game:

Villarreal

Filip Jorgensen - 6

The goalkeeper was not tested much as the defence did the job for most part of the game. He could not do much for the opening goal as it was slighted into the top right corner. Maybe he was at fault for the second goal and could have kept it out of the net.

Raul Albiol - 6

The skipper was decent throughout the game but his pace is still one of the biggest concerns for the side. His experience was significant in some situations but was not able to do much for the side.

Aissa Mandi - 7

A dominating performance for the Algerian in the defence but could have contributed much while defending the second goal. Despite all of that, he was one of the best defenders for the side in this game.

Yerson Mosquera - 6

The full-back was seen running the length of the pitch more often than not and was needed more in the defence to stop the attack from the left flank from Atletico Madrid. He transitioned into attack when required and gave his heart out in this clash in La Liga.

Etienne Capoue - 4

The midfielder had a mediocre game as he lost possession on a few occasions and was not able to dominate the game. He also received a yellow card in the first half for a dodgy challenge and had to be removed early in the second half.

Francis Coquelin - 5

The midfielder had a sluggish game and maybe was at fault for the first goal as he was on the line and could have headed it out before it went inside the net. Overall, his passing was decent but was not able to control the midfield and could not come into the attacking third when required.

Daniel Parejo - 7

The veteran was the crucial player in the midfield and was able to transition from defence into attack when needed. He would be gutted to not have scored despite having a key chance in the 86th minute.

Gerard Moreno - 8

The attacker found himself in key positions throughout the game and was able to grab the key assist for the equaliser. He was replaced after 80 minutes but gave his all for the side throughout the game.

Alexander Sorloth - 9

The lethal striker was on point throughout the game and put Villareal back into the game with his first shot on the target finding the back of the net.

Goncalo Guedes - 5

The attacker was not at his best today and was not able to get into the game despite many opportunities falling to him. The Portuguese International was later substituted in the second half of the match.

Substitutes:

Alex Baena - 7

He turned out to be the spark for the side and was spotted in some key positions for the side. The playmaker was the person for creating the chances and was unlucky to be on the losing end in this game.

Bertrand Traore - N/A

Santi Comesana - 4

The substitute was invisible after coming on and could not provide much for the team in the second half.

Alfonso Pedraza - N/A

Jose Luis Morales - 4

The attacker was not able to do much in the 30 minutes he played in the game and would have wanted some more opportunities in the box to grab a goal for the side.

Atletico Madrid:

Jan Oblak - 7

The Slovenian goalkeeper could have done much better and might have avoided the equaliser from the home side. Otherwise, he was able to play out well from the back and was able to make the required saves.

Axel Witsel - 9

The versatile player showed his class with an amazing header to give his side the league. He switched into midfield for the second half and was able to dominate with his amazing passing abilities.

Jose Maria Gimenez - 7

The centre-back was like a rock in the defence and would be deemed unlucky to be blamed for the goal scored by the opposition. Overall, he had a great game for the side in this encounter.

Reinildo Mandava - 6

The full-back is now often seen as the third centre-back for the team. He was able to put in key interceptions for the side and was one of the strongest in the Atletico defence today.

Marcos Llorente - 5

The attacking defender was nearly invisible throughout the game and could not do much for the side over on the right flank. He was often responsible for losing possession of the ball for his side in the game.

Pablo Barrios Rivas - 6

The young midfielder might have been unlucky to receive the yellow card in the second half. He was energetic and provided the right tempo for his team. The midfielder was not able to do much in the attack which was a slight concern and was removed in the 83rd minute.

Koke - 7

The centre-midfielder was one of the most dominant players in midfield for the side. He was present in both defence and in attack when needed and his key passes often created chances for his side.

Samuel Dias Lino - 7

The midfielder was the danger man for the side on the left flank and often crossed the ball into dangerous positions.  He often caused trouble to the Villareal defence and looked set to get a goal contribution for his side.

Antoine Griezzman - 6

The attacker was playing as the centre attacking midfielder as well as second striker for most of the encounter. He was able to be involved in most attacking plays for the side, however, he was later substituted in the second half and could not contribute more.

Memphis Depay - 5

The Netherlands attack was the key forward for the Atletico Madrid side but was not able to hold the ball for much longer. His shots were also wayward and could not trouble the opposition goalkeeper much. He was substituted later on in the second half after a disappointing performance.

Rodrigo Riquelme - 8

The playmaker was on the field for 45 minutes but was able to make an impact as he got the assist for the opening goal of the game. He was involved in many attacking scenarios and was one of the best players for the team offensively.

Substitutes

Stefan Savic - 6

The centre-back was brought on in a tactical change but it did pay off much for the side as he put in some crucial interceptions and was much needed in the defence.

Alvaro Morata - 7

The forward started off well and was energetic as he made key runs in the opposition half. He was unlucky to not find the net for his side in the second half.

Cesar Azpiculeta - 6

The defender got into some really nice positions in attack and was able to get an assist for the second goal

Angel Correa - 3

In the 30-odd minutes he played, the Argentina attacker was not able to get his foot down and be lethal for the side at all.

Saul Niguez - 6

Despite just being on the pitch for just 10 minutes, he was able to get the second goal for his side and placed it beautifully in the bottom left corner. He got a yellow card as well for an elbow to the Villareal defender.
