Alexis Mac Allister's "absolutely incredible" effort helped Liverpool defeat Brighton 2-1 on Sunday and take the top spot in the English Premier League, according to Jurgen Klopp.
After just two minutes, Danny Welbeck sent Brighton ahead, and the Reds had to rally from behind. Liverpool secured a crucial three points thanks to goals from Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz, but Klopp gave special recognition to Mac Allister, who set up the winning goal.
After the game, Klopp said that Mac Allister's performance against his old team earned him the accolade of player of the match. He said, "I saw a lot of special performances today. Yes, Macca was incredible – absolutely incredible – but when you have that kind of talent when you have that kind of character, then you should show it. It's Macca, he can do that – so do it. That's Conor [Bradley], that's [Jarell] Quansah, that's Wataru, that's Dom… they are that good. That's Joe Gomez. The boys are good, so show it.”
The German manager added, "Yes, I am the biggest fan of these boys but I stopped being surprised if they really perform on the highest level because it is just what I want them to do and then when they do it it's fine. If they cannot do it then I think about why and how we could help, but when they do it I am not as surprised as others maybe, I am just happy the more often they can do it. Great game, so many moments and then Caoimh [Kelleher] puts the ball out of the corner.
Alexis MacAllister buoyant after dominating performance for Liverpool
Mac Allister, on the other hand, praised Liverpool's tenacity for winning despite falling a goal behind in the game. He said, "We didn’t start as we wanted but it was an amazing game, we played against an unbelievable team."
The Argentina midfielder added, "I know them very well, I know what they can do. It was a tough match but at the end we won it, so we are very happy. I would rather not concede so early! But the mentality of the boys is amazing, that's what you need when you are 1-0 down. Today we showed it again. But, as I said, next time we have to try to start winning and not losing."
