The latest evidence of Hansi Flick's strong faith in the FC Barcelona academy was the team's victory against Bayern Munich on Wednesday. Up to nine La Masia players played for the Blaugranes during this match, six of them started, as was previously reported.
Lamine Yamal, who also received one assist in this game, was once again the most well-known among these youth academy graduates. Although Raphinha received more attention for the hat trick than Yamal did for this game, the young player still displayed some impressive skills.
He has scored a total of five goals and contributed seven assists across thirteen games this season, so there is no denying that he is off to a great start. Naturally, his achievements at the young age of 17 have drawn comparisons to the legendary Lionel Messi of Barcelona.
“We need to be patient” : Jordi Alba on Lamine Yamal
Former Barcelona skipper and full-back Jordi Alba, who presently plays with Messi at Inter Miami, was the most recent person to respond to these similarities. Ahead of the MLS Cup Playoffs, in which his Inter Miami team will play Atalanta United in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals, the Spaniard took part in an interview and answered a few questions.
The Inter Miami defender spoke (as quoted by Marca) as he said, “When I was at Barça, he was already training occasionally with the first team, and he even debuted in a match against Betis. It’s clear that he’s grown tremendously—he’s just 17, and what he’s doing is incredible. He needs support, and the people there are doing a great job with him.”
The former FC Barcelona full-back added, “We need to be patient and not compare him to anyone, because in the end, Leo is Leo, and there’s no one else like him. But I think he’s having a great season, taking on responsibilities that aren’t easy at 17, and that deserves a lot of credit. I hope he continues to learn and enjoy football.”
