CF Monterrey beat the Herons by 2-1 in the first leg match of the CONCACAF Champions Cup on Wednesday.  It was again a no-show by the Herons against Monterrey at home at Chase Stadium. The Herons were without the services of their star player Lionel Messi who was expected to return to the field against Rayados. But his availability in this match cost them as they lost to Monterrey by 2-1 after being reduced to a 10-men team upon the sending off of David Ruiz in the 65th minute of the match.

Tata Martino opens up on Messi’s return

The Inter Miami boss Tata Martino after the match faced the media and opened up on the availability of Lionel Messi. He revealed that he is not sure about Messi’s return as he is not fully fit and rushing him into a game could be risky. However, he is hoping for him to be available for the next two games.

Talking to the press after the match Tata Martino said, “Well, as we mentioned, things are improving day by day. Playing him today was risky, as he is not completely ready, and this will be the case against Colorado and, the next Monterrey match.”

Impact of Messi’s unavailability on Heron’s performance

The adverse impact of Lionel Messi’s unavailability has been quite evident on Heron’s performance in the championship as they have managed to win only two of the 12 matches played in Messi’s absence since his arrival at South Beach in July last year.

Messi’s unmatched skill set and his leadership are something that are lacking in his absence which is reflected in Heron’s performance. However, they are set to play their next two matches in the next seven days and will be hoping that Messi is available for these matches as winning these two matches is crucial for their qualification for the next round of the Champions Cup.

What lies ahead for Inter Miami?

Heron’s next fixture in MLS is scheduled to take place on Saturday against the Colorado Rapids, after which they will face Monterrey in the second leg where they will look to bounce back against the Mexican club. However, Messi's participation will be uncertain, and he will be evaluated in the next few days and then a final call will be taken on him.
