Even before the season kicked off, there was already a rising amount of tension in Chelsea's locker room. Footage of Fernandez and the other Argentina player singing an anti-French song surfaced shortly after Argentina defeated Colombia to claim their 16th Copa America championship. The contentious video with Enzo singing together with Argentine teammates disparaging the French national team that went viral online is causing outrage. Some people are denouncing this as racist remarks.

The Chelsea player abruptly stopped the feed after receiving backlash on social media for filming the video on his phone while on the team bus. Journalist Fabrice Hawkins now alleges that these shouts have infuriated Chelsea's players, particularly the French players. Axel Disasi, Malo Gusto, and Wesley Fofana, all the three French players within the Chelsea team have all stopped following Enzo Fernandez on Instagram as of today.

Once translated the song means, "They play for France, but their parents are from Angola. Their mother is from Cameroon, while their father is from Nigeria. But their passport says French." Through their president Philippe Diallo, the French Football Federation, or FFF, denounced the video and threatened to take FIFA to court. FFF president Philippe Diallo called for FIFA and the Argentine Football Association to immediately take action, harshly denouncing the acts of the Argentina players in a press release.
