In FC Barcelona's 3-2 loss to Real Madrid, Joao Cancelo wasn't able to have an excellent game. Cancelo was taken aback when Real Madrid's Lucas Vázquez scored in the 73rd minute. Vinicius supplied the right wing cross that resulted in the goal. Marco van Basten and Ronald de Boer, two legendary Dutch football players, were unrelenting in their criticism of Cancelo during their post-game analysis on the Dutch channel Ziggo Sport.  The former three-time Ballon d'Or winner Van Basten was especially critical, stating,"It's unbelievable that Cancelo is still making the same mistakes at 29 years old."

Conversely, Cancelo was chastised by Ronald de Boer, a Barça player from the 1998–99 and 1999–00 seasons, for his absence of defending cohesion. He said that he was let go by Pep Guardiola in the middle of the previous campaign, which resulted in being loaned to Bayern Munich and subsequent summer transfer to Barcelona.

The former FC Barcelona icon said that, "Now I understand why Pep isn't a fan of Cancelo. This guy plays his own game and only cares about what he does with the ball. Come on, you're a defender!"

After receiving criticism for his performance versus Paris Saint-Germain during the second leg in the UEFA Champions League quarter finals, Cancelo was unable to make up for it at the Santiago Bernabé. On a move reminiscent of Lucas Vázquez's, Ousmane Dembélé scored a goal and Cancelo failed to convert. He gave the French winger a penalty during the second half, which helped Luis' team Enrique win 1-3.

Manchester City looking to sell Portugal full-back Joao Cancelo

Naturally, Cancelo remains a City player, even though both the player and Barcelona have openly expressed their intention to stay together for the upcoming campaign. According to reports, Barcelona wants him back on loan.

But City is eager to part ways with him completely for a price tag of at least €30 million. Strangely enough, his performances won't have increased his market value, which might make him closer to rejoining the Blaugrana.
