FIFA declared on Wednesday that the Club World Cup, which is being held in the United States this year, will award a total of $1 billion in prize money to its competitors. The amount far exceeds the prize money awarded at the most recent World Cups for both men and women. Although it has recruited a broadcaster and key sponsors in recent weeks, the governing body of world football has not provided many details regarding the funding of the inaugural iteration of the 32-team competition, which will be held every four years.
"The FIFA Club World Cup will not only be the pinnacle of club football, but also a vivid demonstration of solidarity that will benefit clubs at large to a scale that no other competition has ever done." "All revenue generated by the tournament will be distributed to the participating clubs and via club solidarity across the world as FIFA will not keep a single dollar," said FIFA president Gianni Infantino.
FIFA stated in a statement that it anticipated the expanded Club World Cup would bring approximately $2 billion in revenue, confirming the prize money available. Additionally, it confirmed that a women's edition will start in 2028. FIFA has also inked sponsorship deals with Belgian breweries AB InBev, Coca-Cola, Bank of America, and Chinese electronics manufacturer Hisense.
12 teams from Europe to feature in FIFA Club World Cup
In contrast, the total prize money for the 2023 Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand was $110 million, while the 2022 Men's World Cup in Qatar had $440 million. With a new 36-club format, the UEFA Champions League this season will give participating clubs a total payout of 2.47 billion euros ($2.66 billion).
The tournament will feature 12 teams from Europe along with six South American teams and four each from Asia, Africa, and North and Central America. Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami and Auckland City fill up the last two spots in the FIFA Club World Cup. The tournament will be hosted in USA across eleven cities. The final game will be held at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey which is also host for the FIFA World Cup final in 2026.
