Barcelona suffered a setback during the international break as young talent Fermin Lopez sustained an injury while representing the Spain Under-21 national team. The medical examinations confirmed that the 21-year-old could only return after three weeks.

Fermin is set to return to pitch sooner than expected

It was anticipated that Fermin would make his return to the field towards the end of September, with the game against Getafe targeted as his comeback match. However, Mundo Deportivo now reports that Fermin might surprise everyone with an earlier return this week when Barcelona faces AS Monaco in their UEFA Champions League opener. The 21-year-old attacking midfielder is reportedly progressing well in his recovery and is likely to expedite his return.

It is highly likely that the Blaugrana medical team will grant the Spaniard medical clearance in time for Thursday's Champions League match against the Ligue 1 team.

There remain two training sessions before the squad for the Monaco trip is finalized, and it is quite possible that Fermin will be included, Fermin could very well be a part of the club's first Champions League fixture.

Barcelona needs Fermin following Olmo's injury

It is anticipated that the upcoming La Liga match against Villarreal may mark the return of the Olympic gold medalist. Should this be the case, it would serve as a significant boost for Hansi Flick and Barcelona, particularly following the recent loss of Dani Olmo to injury, which will sideline him for a month. Fermin's potential early comeback would offer Flick a viable replacement for Olmo, a development of particular importance given the demanding fixture schedule Barcelona faces in the coming three weeks.
