La Liga authorities are hoping that FIFA will sanction the idea of holding FC Barcelona's December league match versus Atletico Madrid in Miami. This would mark the first time that a La Liga game has been held in the US. The suggestion will ultimately be decided by FIFA, the world governing body of football.
Before La Liga takes a break for the winter, the game is presently set for December 22. Early in January, Atletico and FC Barcelona will prepare to compete in the four-team Spanish Super Cup, which is being staged in Saudi Arabia.
FIFA backed out of a lawsuit filed in April by major match producer Relevent, which wants to hold international league games in the US. FIFA declared the following month that it was forming a working group to examine the possible effects of holding competitive domestic matches overseas. FIFA is thought to be open to approving the proposal as well. The competition's fairness, which is characterized by its balance, and its effect on local fans have not been questioned.
Javier Tebas, the president of La Liga, has expressed his wish to bring La Liga matches abroad. In January 2019, FC Barcelona had intended to play Girona in a league match in Miami. However, the plan was shelved due to criticism from Spain's football association and players' union.
“What can I say about it” : Jose Maria Gimenez
Jose Maria Gimenez, a defender for Atletico Madrid, has criticized the idea of playing Barcelona in the United States in December. Los Rojiblancos will play FC Barcelona at Montjuic on December 21 or 22, but the Uruguayan believes La Liga games should remain in Spain.
Before their UEFA Champions League match against Lille on Tuesday, Gimenez was asked about the notion, and his response was crystal obvious. The Uruguay defender said, “Me, honestly, I didn’t know about it. But well, what can I say about it, I hope that it is played here, with the fans that follow us in every game.”
