'Never write-off Germans!' Fans react as Borussia Dortmund beat Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in UCL semi-final

Borussia Dortmund defeated Atletico Madrid in the quarter-finals, with Paris Saint-Germain who made an amazing comeback against FC Barcelona after being 2-3 down in the 1st leg and comeback winning it 4-1 in the second leg, the teams were drawn in the semi-final of the UEFA Champions League 2023-24. The German side hosted the French champions in the 1st leg at the Signal Iduna Park on Wednesday. 

The match started end to end with Dortmund having the best chances in the first half of the game. However Marcel Sabitzer was denied by Gianluigi Donnarumma in the 14th minute of the game. PSG tried to get inside the box and made some good runs through the likes of Ousmane Dembele down the wings but the final ball in the box was missing as they failed to deliver in the final third of the home side’s box. 

After an end to end game for 30 minutes, an excellent long ball from Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck towards Niclas Fullkrug as the latter brought down the ball with a beautiful first touch and slotting in the back of the net, breaking the deadlock in the 36th minute of the game. The striker again linked up with Sabitzer in the dying minutes of the first 45 but the Austrian’s volley was again stopped by the Italian keeper. 

PSG could not capitalise their chances

The second half began exactly the opposite way as PSG started pressing up the field and creating chances for them, as they came close in the 51 minutes after Kylian Mbappe’s curling shot ended up hitting the post and the re-bound strike by Achraf Hakimi also ended up hitting the lower part of the post. On the break the home side had the chance of making 2-0 after Jadon Sancho’s brilliant run and cut back pass was missed by Fullkrug near the six yard of the goal. 

The chances were not capitalise by both sides Dembele missed from a close range and Dortmund had the best chances in the second half as well with Sancho;s through ball finding Julian Brandt inside the box who failed to score after Marquinhos blocked his shot. Fullkrug's goal turned out to be the winner with the game ending at 1-0.
