On Thursday, the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals 1st leg took place. With all 8 teams playing on the same day at the same time. Liverpool facing Atalanta BC, SL Benfica facing Olympique Marseille, AC Milan hosting AS Roma and finally Bayer Leverkusen facing West Ham United. All the teams tried to play their best football in order to secure a win ahead of the 2nd leg of the competition.

Atalanta started brilliantly against Liverpool Caoimhin Kelleher made an early 1v1 save to keep the score 0-0, Darwin Nunez had the best chance for the side but failed to put it back Juan Musso. Gianluca Scamacca scored for the side in the 38th minute. On the other side at the Italian derby Roma was better at San Siro in the first half as Gianluca Mancini scored from a corner of Paulo Dybala to open the scoring for the side.

Leverkusen scores late against West Ham

In Germany Bayer Leverkusen survived after West Ham United’s Mohammed Kudus failed to convert from an open chance.The first half at Leverkusen was 0-0. Benfica took the lead as Rafa Silva scored in the 16 minutes of the game. The 2nd half at Anfield started the opposite with the Reds pressing up the field as Mohamed Salah who came in as a substitute scored the equaliser but Juan Musso was the saviour. After soaking in the pressure from the Reds, Atalanta scored again from the counter with the same man scoring his second of the game. Benfica scored in the early stages making it 2-0 with Angel Di Maria who scored from the counter attack. 

The 2nd half in San Siro was more of a physical battle with around 16 fouls were made till the hour mark of the game. The game got ended in 1-0 with Milan missing one open opportunity after Olivier Giroud missed an golden chance to bring his side back on level terms. Leverskusen and their story of scoring late goals this season has been exciting to watch with the game drawn for 82, as Jonas Hofmann broke the deadlock for the game after which Victor Boniface made it 2-0 in the added time. Marseille pulled one back with Piere Emrick-Aubameyang scoring in the 67th minute of the game.
