Italy won the Euro 2020, which was only their second instance of winning the tournament. Their first win came in 1968 and they had to wait for over 52 years to become the champions. The 4-time World Champions beat England in their backyard in Wembley in the final of the tournament to script a famous win. In the penalty shootout, Italy claimed an incredible win.

Since then, a lot of things have changed. Italy is not led by their manager Roberto Mancini. A lot of their players who played in 2021 are also in 2024. Some of the players have announced their retirement, while others have not featured in the squad in 2024.

As the Euros 2024 is set to start in the next 4 days, it is time to look at Italy's playing XI in 2021 and see where they are.

Giorgio Chiellini - Chiellini was one of the most experienced players in the lineup. He formed the core of the defence and did a brilliant job in the tournament. He retired in December 2023 before being a part of the MLS.


Gianluigi Donnarumma - He was too over among the fans for his incredible goalkeeping in the tournament. Soon after the tournament, he got a massive contract from PSG. Currently, he is with PSG and is being picked in the Italy squad. However, Guglielmo Vicario is in contention to start in the XI in 2024.


Leonardo Bonucci - Italy's defence was the highlight of the tournament. It had some of the most experienced campaigners. Bonucci was one such player who did well in the unit. He played for Union Berlin after the tournament and retired in May 2024.


Emerson Palmieri - Along with the experienced defenders in the lineup, he learned a lot. Emerson is currently with West Ham since the 2021/22 season. Unfortunately, he could not find a spot in Italy's squad for Euros 2024.


Giovanni Di Lorenzo - The star player was rock solid for Italy in the defence unit in the tournament. He has been a part of Napoli since then. In back-to-back seasons in 2021/22 and 2022/23, he did well for his side. However, in the ongoing 2023/24 season, Di Lorenzo is not in good form. It is a concern for Italy ahead of the Euros 2024.


Marco Verratti - He did well in the midfield for Italy in the tournament. In the last few months, Verratti has been playing for Al Arabi in the Qatar Stars League. Marco could not find a spot in the squad of Italy for the Euros 2024.


Jorginho - He has been with Arsenal since 2022 and is doing a great job in the midfield. The star player was useful for Italy with his gameplay last season. Even for the 2024 season, the star player has been picked in the squad by Italy.


Nicolo Barella - The midfielder has been with Inter Milan since 2021. He has been equally good for his club and Italy in the last few years. He will be key for Italy to defend its title in the upcoming season.


Federico Chiesa - He did a brilliant job as a forward in the Euros 2020. Since then, the star player has been a part of Juventus. Reports claim him to leave the club after the conclusion of the ongoing season.


Ciro Immobile - He was one of the best players for Italy in their title-winning campaign in Euros 2020. Since 2016, the star player has been a part of Lazio. In 270 matches, he has 169 goals to his name. Unfortunately, Ciro could not make it to Italy's squad in 2024.


Lorenzo Insigne - The star forward of Italy has been in MLS since June 2022 playing for Toronto FC, Before that, he played a crucial role in Italy winning the Euros 2020. Lorenzo could not find a spot in Italy's squad in 2024.


Roberto Mancini - The revolutionary Manager was responsible for the massive turnaround in Italy ahead of the tournament. He got the pieces together and helped Italy to win the Euros. He has been Saudi Arabia's coach since August 2023. Italy probably needs a person like him for their future in the sport.
