Chelsea, one of the most popular sporting clubs, is presently in a precarious position. According to reports, the Premier League giants are preparing to sell key players Reece James and Conor Gallagher to comply with the financial fair play regulations.
The club's hefty spending spree since the takeover by the Clearlake capital consortium in 2022 has raised concerns. Following a significant expenditure on procuring players like Nicolas Jackson, Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo, and Cole Palmer, Chelsea's accounts need balancing. The Premier League's profit and sustainability rules are quite strict, and Everton and Nottingham Forest's recent punishments for breaching them serve as a stark warning. Chelsea have viewed those moves seriously.
The sale of James and Gallagher, both England internationals, would generate significant revenue. Their departures, however, would leave a gaping hole in the Chelsea squad, particularly with James being their captain. He has not been able to play too many games this season owing to an injury but is still a crucial member of the side. Moreover, he still has four years left according to the contract that he signed with the club. As such, it will be interesting to note the upcoming developments. Gallagher on the other hand, was not a part of the starting 11 initially but has done well to make himself looked at seriously.
Pochettino faces a huge test
The club's manager, Mauricio Pochettino will have his task cut out as he faces a rebuilding task. While the transfer fees would ease financial concerns, replacing players of James and Gallagher's calibre won't be easy.
To add to his concerns, Chelsea haven't had a great time this season as they have won just 11 out of their 28 games thus far. As such, they are ranked 11th as far as the points table is concerned. Their next game is against Manchester United on Friday, April 5th. To Chelsea's relief, United have also been quite inconsistent this season and hence, they will be looking to do well against them.
