Lionel Messi has arguably been the most decorated footballer of all time. The Argentine playmaker has nothing left to be achieved in the football world. The eight times Ballon d’Or winner is presently featuring in the Copa America 2024, but it has not been the best of times for him as he failed to score so far for the games and will also be missing the final group stage game against Peru after he picked up a knock in the game against Chile.

He celebrated his 37th birthday with his teammates a few days back and the Argentina great might also be retiring from football soon. Ahead of the final group game, Boxing superstar Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez has apologised to the La Albiceleste captain for their spat during the 2022 World Cup. The controversy began after the three-time world Champions won against Mexico.

A controversial leaked video featuring Messi and a Mexico jersey. The 37-year-old was seen kicking a discarded Mexico shirt in the locker room celebrations following Argentina's 2-0 victory, which disturbed the middleweight champion. He vented his rage on social media shortly after the incident in Qatar, threatening to knock him out if he met him someday.

You have to admit when you are wrong: Canelo Alvarez

Canelo seemed to apologise back in November 2022 to social media to confess he "got carried away with the passion and love" for his nation. Although recently he has owed his apologies to the greatest footballer of the era explaining the reasons why he did so.

Alvarez explained to Univision Fresno, "You have to admit when you are wrong. It doesn't make you better or worse. You have to admit when you make a mistake. The euphoria of supporting the Mexican team at that moment and to see them losing like that... well obviously you don't put too much thought into your actions. But you have to recognise when you mess up and that's it."

Argentina will be looking to defend the trophy as they have already qualified for the quarter-finals of the tournament and will face Venezuela or Mexico in the last 8 of the quadrennial tournament.
