Days after Mats Hummels threatened to leave Borussia Dortmund, the team’s head coach Edin Terzic has stepped down from the post. Terzic said that he wants the club to go into a new era with a new coach. However, he didn’t utter a word about the next possible coach.

In a statement released by the club Terzic said, “After the game at Wembley, I asked for a meeting with the club’s senior management team, because after 10 years at BVB – including five on the coaching staff and two and a half as head coach – I feel that the club’s new era should begin with a new man on the touchline.”

“Everyone close to me knows that this has been a very difficult decision for me to take over the last few weeks, but after intensive discussions, my fundamental feeling has not changed.” It’s worth noting that Terzic almost had a dream run with Dortmund.

He won the German Cup as interim coach with Dortmund in 2021 before taking the permanent role in May 2022. Since then, he has led the team into various tournaments including runner-up in Bundesliga 2023 and fifth finish in this year’s tournament. His last game as coach came in Champions League finals against Real Madrid where Dortmund lost by 0-2.

Is Hummels' pressure working behind Terzic’s resignation?

It’s worth noting that a few days back Borussia Dortmund star Mats Hummels reportedly threatened to quit the club if the team fails to replace head coach Edin Terzic. This report came after he missed out on a place in the German squad for the upcoming UEFA Euro 2024

Notably, the German veteran has been phenomenal in his football career. He had a ridiculous season for Borussia Dortmund in the recently concluded UEFA Champions League. He had the most won tackles (27), duels (79), interceptions (21), and clearances (62) than any other player in the competition.
