Manchester City are one of the strongest sides in the European competition. The Sky Blues are the favourites to win the English Premier League this season as well. Pep Guardiola's side has been one of the dominant sides in English football since their Saudi takeover. If they win the PL 2023/24 the side will be winning its fourth consecutive title and this will be their 7th overall league title in the last decade. The side could not defend their UEFA Champions League title after getting knocked out of the quarter-finals.

The club have produced some of the greatest talents in world football. With the likes of Sergio Aguero, Jadon Sancho, Phil Foden and a lot more. Foden however has been one of the brightest talents for the squad. The English winger has been a matchwinner for the side. The 23-year-old winger has now won the Football Writers' Association (FWA) Footballer of the Year award. This award is an annual award given to the player who is adjudged as the best player for the season in PL.

As the current season is at the business end the top English journalists have looked back at the winger's season. The City forward has enjoyed his best season so far, emerging as the most important player for the club with five games to go. He has been the difference maker for the side in the absence of Kevin de Bruyne and Erling Haaland. In the article, we will be looking at the reasons why Foden won the FWA award.

Here are the 5 reasons why Foden won FWA Footballer of the Year

5. Stepping up as a matchwinner in key players' absence

Foden was always brilliant in the league, but in the current season what made him different from the others? He has been a matchwinner for the side in the absence of De Bruyne and Erling Haaland and stepped up on the biggest of occasions for the side leading his team to win the game.

4. Fourth most goals scored from open play

The 23-year-old winger has been involved for the fourth most goal from open play. Foden has scored 13 goals in the season from open play and he would like to add to the tally with five games in hand and also help City to win their fourth consecutive title. With Euros 2024 just a month away he will be a player to watch for in Germany.

3. Most goal involvements for the club

Foden has been involved with 24 goals and 10 assists across all competitions with five games to go. For this very reason he has been a game-changer for the side with 34 goal involvements and it is the most by any player for the Sky Blues in the ongoing season. He will look to add some more in the remaining games.

2. Chances created from open play

The winger is 6th in the list for the most chances created from open play not only he is a prolific goal scorer but also has been a playmaker for the side in the lack of some key players in the side. He has created 50 chances from open play and some of them have led to ending up in the back of the net.

1. Most Hattricks

Phil Foden has scored some clutch goals this season and has scored two hattricks in the season the most by any player in the current season against Aston Villa and Brentford. He would like to add more to his tally in the upcoming seasons and make a PL great for the club. The Englishman has been amazing in the wings or playing as a No.10 for the side creating chances for the club and scoring long-range goals.
