Mountaintop Studios, the developers behind ‘Spectre Divide’, a 3v3 tactical FPS with an interesting take on the gameplay loop is shutting down as per an announcement from the CEO. Along with the studio, the game servers are also expected to be shut down within the next 30 days marking the end of another live service game.
“Since the PC launch, we stretched our remaining capital as far as we could, but at this point, we're out of funding to support the game. This means Mountaintop will be closing its doors at the end of this week. We expect to take Spectre offline within the next 30 days, but we plan on disabling new purchases and refunding money spent since Season 1 launch via the platforms,” CEO Nate Mitchell said.
The game launched back in September 2024 with former Counter-Strike pro 'Shroud' promoting the game. Spectre Divide had a lot going on in terms of gameplay. On the surface, it was a 3v3, but players also have a clone they can use to scout navigate, etc. There were also different character abilities.
Spectre Divide failed to build an audience
Despite having an interesting concept, Spectre Divide couldn’t get past the initial hype. Players complained about the gameplay being too slow and the maps being too big. On top of that, the cosmetic bundles were a bit overpriced before being adjusted. Throughout all this, the game lost a lot of players.
The season 1 update also did not manage to retain or bring back the expected audience. The game wasn’t exactly ‘bad’, but the concept of the clones was new and slowed down the game, something not many games have managed to pull off. It ultimately did not match up to the expectations.
“We wanted to deliver something innovative and original in a crowded genre that would bring friends together around unforgettable moments. We shook up the format, created a fresh art style and universe, and partnered with some of our heroes. All of us knew from the beginning that the odds were against us, but that's what we signed up for. It was never a surefire bet. We did it anyway,” Mitchell further added.
