Fans have finally headed from Riot Games and revealed the details regarding the upcoming Mid-Season Invitational (MSI) 2024 for League of Legends. The format is mostly the same, but the stakes this year have been increased a little.
Top teams across various regions will compete with each other beginning from May 1 to May 19. The event will take place in Chengdu, China, featuring the top two teams from the LPL, LEC, LCS, and LCK. Furthermore, four more teams from LLA, CBLoL, PCS, and VCS will also secure a spot.
Format
In total, 12 teams will take part in the MSI. The top teams from LPL, LEC, LCS, and LCK will directly qualify for the bracket stage. The eight remaining teams will be divided into two groups and will fight for their spot at the Play-In Stage.
Only four teams from the Play-In Stage (the top two from each group) will move to the bracket stage. The bracket stages will be played in a best-of-five double-elimination format, leading to the grand finale on May 19. Below is a complete schedule -
Play-In Stage: May 1-5
Bracket Stage (first half): May 7-12
Bracket Stage (second half): May 14-18
Final: May 19
Higher stakes
This will be the first-ever Mid-Season Invitational, where the winner will secure a spot at the 2024 League of Legends World Championship. Before this, there was no such provision and the MSI was just a regular tournament, the new rule was added in 2024.
It gives the team a chance to qualify early for the major championship. The slot for the winning team will count as an additional slot and will not affect the ones already assigned to each region.
There is a small requirement for the winner placed by Riot Games to have a fair regional tournament. The team qualifying for Worlds early through MSI can only make use of their slot if they reach the Playoffs in their domestic Summer split.
