The adorable pygmy hippopotamus, Moo Deng, has seemingly made waves across the internet, including the online community of Final Fantasy 14. Thanks to Moo Deng’s cuteness, the in-game hippo minion for FFXIV is now skyrocketing with reports coming that the increase up to 1000% of the original price in the market.
The price for a hippo calf minion was noticed at around 17,000 gil, however, as soon as the video of Moo Deng took over social media, it seemed everyone wanted their personal Moo Deng as players saw the price hit up to 300,000 gals. Who would’ve thought a cute hippo would help make players a bank inside the game?
The fandom does not stop there, as someone even went on to mod T-shirts for characters with Moo Deng on them. Even the developer seems to be joining the fandom, with the official account posting a clip of the hippo calf minion.
Where did Moo Deng come from?
Moo Deng is a female pygmy hippopotamus in Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand and went viral as soon as the first appearance on the internet. Multiple videos of Moo Deng can often be seen with the zookeepers feeding and bathing her, however, her cute reaction is what caught the attention of people.
As for the Moo Deng in Final Fantasy, the hippo minion was added with the Endwalker expansion in 2021, way back before Moo Deng was born. But a cute viral hippo isn’t the only reason why the prices are skyrocketing inside the game.
In reality, to get yourself a virtual Moo Deng, players need to complete a Vanaspati dungeon where they can loot a hippo calf as a reward. However, the low drop rate for the hippo makes it much more expensive and those who had previously farmed or got luck during their clears are reaping their rewards, all thanks to Moo Deng.
