GTA 5 is back on top, at least in Europe, as the game is once again topping the European sales charts, taking over even new popular AAA game releases like Star Wars Outlaw. A report from GamesIndustryBiz revealed that the game saw a 5.7% year-on-year sales increase. This was mostly thanks to running discounts.

The fact that GTA 5 can still dominate the video game market more than a decade after its release also reveals the quality of the game. Games like Hogwarts Legacy, Star Wars Outlaws and many others are in no way inferior in terms of quality, but GTA 5 still managed to prevail.

Here are the top 10 games of August in Europe

1. Grand Theft Auto 5
2. Star Wars Outlaws
3. Hogwarts Legacy
4. Kingdom Come: Deliverance
5. EA Sports FC 24
6. Borderlands 3
7. Red Dead Redemption 2
8. Grand Theft Auto Online
9. Titanfall 2
10. It Takes Two

Apart from GTA 5, another notable game here is Kingdom Come: Deliverance, which recently went to an all-time low price. The next instalment in the series is coming in February 2025 and with the popularity of the first game, fans expect a lot from the follow-up.

Why is GTA 5 still on top?

There are a lot of factors affecting the sales of GTA 5, the obvious one being an open-world game that gives players a lot of freedom paired with a great story. However, this isn’t enough to generate better sales. The reason is likely due to the ongoing discounts.

New games usually come with a hefty price tag, and a sale makes choosing a similarly fun game much easier. Another big reason could be the ongoing hype around GTA 6. The game is set to release next year, and people who haven’t experienced GTA 5 likely picked up the game.
