It has not been a week since Crystal Dynamics laid off their employees on the grounds of “better alignment of business needs.” Furthermore, Eidos Montreal has announced that they are going to layoff a total of 75 people from their workforce, since they have more manpower than the workload justifies.
The studio took to X (formerly known as Twitter), to convey an official statement. The statement read, “Today, we informed our studio staff that we are going to let go up to 75 valuable members, as one of our mandates is coming to an end.It is not a reflection of their dedication or skills, but unfortunately, we don’t have the capacity to entirely re-allocate them to our other ongoing projects and services. These very talented, highly experienced experts are going to enter the employment market, and we are working to support them through this transition."
Studio sights workforce imbalance as key reason for job cuts
It came as a shocker to many since a couple of years back, the company was working to support the recently re-scoped properties and studios on Fable, as per the reports. In August 2022, it came to the forefront that Eidos Montreal had been taken over by the Embracer. This was alongwith Square Enix Montreal and Crystal Dynamics. It was not long after the acquisition that the Embracer had to face a lot of difficulties after a very essential project with Saudi Arabia’s Savvy Group fell through. Owing to this, in 2024, Embracers had to face the consequences, laying off 97 of its employees thereafter.
By 2024, the company reported that they were ending their restructuring process. But, as per further layoffs in 2025, it is quite evident that the company has been facing difficulties and simultaneously raises questions on their financial stability. By the end of the statement, Eidos Montreal also said that they are "committed to deliver its other projects currently in development."
