Indian cricket sensation Yashasvi Jaiswal is in fray for his maiden ODI call-up in the next few weeks. The 23-year-old is yet to play the fifty-over format after having played T20I and Test cricket for India. According to reports carried by Revsportz, Jaiswal is likely to be the backup opener for the home ODI series against England. The young batter will also likely be part of the squad for the Champions Trophy 2025.
Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill have been the ODI openers for India since the start of 2023 and have done well so far. Yashasvi Jaiswal had an incredible 2024 with the bat in the Test format with over 1000 runs with three centuries. He was also part of the squad for the T20 World Cup, which was won by India, but didn’t get to play a single game.
Team India begins their white-ball season with a T20I series against England, followed by the ODI series. This will be followed by the Champions Trophy 2025 tournament, with India playing their games in Dubai. Rohit Sharma and his men are placed with Bangladesh, Pakistan, and New Zealand as per the groups released by the ICC.
Jasprit Bumrah set to be new full-time vice-captain
The report from Revsportz has also revealed that Jasprit Bumrah could be given a rest for the home series against England. The 31-year-old was down with back spasms, which didn’t let Bumrah bowl in the final innings of the BGT series. Various news sources also indicate that Bumrah could be named the vice captain in the ODI format as well.
Mohammed Siraj is yet another pacer who could be rested for the England T20 series. The 30-year-old played all five Test matches against Australia and also reached the 100 Test wickets mark with the ball. Siraj, though, is likely to be part of the ODI squad and Champions Trophy team as well.
The onus of leading the bowling in the T20I format will fall on Arshdeep Singh. The left-arm seamer has been impressing everyone with his maturity and is just 5 wickets away from becoming the first Indian bowler to pick 100 T20I wickets. The selectors are likely to announce the squad for the England series on 12th January.
