Australia's former legendary batter Ricky Ponting has been appointed as the head coach of the Punjab Kings ahead of the 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). As per the statement of the CEO Satish Menon, Ponting will serve the team for the next four seasons, helping them build a team from scratch since the mega auction is coming up in December.

“We are delighted to have Ricky on to guide and build our team for the next 4 seasons. His experience is crucial to help us develop a squad to deliver on-field success. His insights from his international coaching stints and as a television pundit would be vital in identifying talent ahead of the mega auction this year. His ability to develop cricketing and leadership skills will play a crucial role in our success,” said Satish Menon, the franchise CEO.

Previously, Ponting has worked with several franchises like Mumbai Indians (MI) and Delhi Capitals (DC). His stint with MI was quite good, as they won the cup, but with DC, he couldn't do much. He parted ways with the Capitals after the IPL 2024 and now has joined PKBS. Moreover, both DC and PBKS haven't won a single trophy, and now, under Ponting's coaching stint, they'll hope to build a solid team and win the trophy this year.

Ricky Ponting seems to be a bad choice for PBKS as head coach

While the Punjab Kings are super-excited to welcome their new head coach, Ricky Ponting, this seems to be a mistake. While Pointing had a good venture with the Mumbai Indians, his stint with Delhi Capitals wasn't good. If we analyse the situation, MI always had a good and established team with talented and experienced players. On the other hand, DC's team didn't have prominent players in the squad. Hence, Ponting failed to do wonders.

The same will happen with PBKS as they don't have prominent match-winners in the team. Moreover, PBKS could have also looked for Indian coaches like VVS Laxman and Harbhajan Singh, who could have worked with the Indian players and brought out the best in them. Now, they can hope for a better result from Ponting in his four-year venture.
