Former Australian legendary player Greg Chappelll and the former Indian coach urged the Indian selectors to take a call on Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's future in red-ball cricket because of their recent performances. While Kohli scored a century in the first match, Rohit has been a failure for a long time now. This is the main reason why Chappelll spoke about the selection committee taking the matter into its own hands.
"It’s not up to the players necessarily to make those decisions. They might want to make that decision. But it’s a well-paid job. Who’s going to walk away from it? Someone else has to make that decision. That’s why you need robust selection panels and policies," said Greg Chappelll.
India's third Test against Australia will start on December 14, in Brisbane. The most important series for both teams will conclude in January, and by then, the qualification scenario for the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 finals. India and Australia are the only teams struggling to qualify, as South Africa is in the first position. They won the series against Sri Lanka, and due to that, they moved up in the points table.
You’ll have your ups and downs as a player: Greg Chappell
Greg Chappell stressed the point that the Board needs to hire the right people to be the selectors. This will help them scout better players for the team, which will benefit them in the long term. The third match will be crucial for Kohli and Rohit since they have to prove their consistency.
"It’s very tough. You’ve got to pick the right people to be selectors, the ones that are prepared to have those tough conversations. Depends on the relationships between the various people in the room. But we all go through it, everyone that plays at that level. You’ll have your ups and downs as a player. With good players, you prefer to give them a game too many than a game too few. So, it’s always tough to get that balance right," added Greg Chappell.
