The start of the second Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 qualifier game between the Punjab Kings and the Mumbai Indians was delayed due to rain. There was a massive shower that began pelting down at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad just as the umpires had walked out for the start of the game. Shreyas Iyer had won the toss and opted to bowl first as both sides want to win the game and play Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the finals on Tuesday night.
Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings both made one change to their side ahead of the game. Richard Gleeson was replaced by English left-arm seamer Reece Topley for the encounter. Harpreet Brar was rested for the game as Yuzvendra Chahal made his long-awaited return to the playing XI.
What happens if PBKS vs MI encounter is rained out?
If the second qualifier game on Sunday is washed out due to rain, then Punjab Kings will make it to the finals. The reason is that PBKS managed to finish at the top of the table while MI finished their league campaign in the fourth spot. This will be a huge blow for MI, who had beaten the Gujarat Titans in the last match.
According to the official rules of the league which states “If conditions do not permit a Super Over, or subsequent Super Overs within the time available to determine the winner then the team which, at the end of the relevant regular Season, finished in the higher position in the League will be deemed the winner of the relevant play-off match,”
Will there be a reserve day for the game?
Unfortunately, there is no reserve day for the second qualifier, and the game has to be played on Sunday itself. Since the finals is set to be played on Tuesday, the scheduling couldn’t allow the chance for a reserve day to come into place?
What is the cutoff time before overs are cut?
According to the updated playing rules, the match has been given two hours of extended time. If the first ball is bowled before 9:30 PM IST, we can have a full game. If the game doesn’t start after the 120-minute time limit, then the game will start to witness overs being reduced.
