Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad is set to witness the IPL 2025 second qualifier game between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Mumbai Indians. Richard Gleeson, who made his MI debut last game against the Gujarat Titans, has been ruled out due to injury. Left-arm seamer Reece Topley is set to make his first appearance of the season for his English teammate.
It was Shreyas Iyer who won the toss and chose to bowl first on what was a windy and overcast evening in Ahmedabad. Punjab made one change to their side as Yuzvendra Chahal was back in the playing XI. Chahal hadn’t played the last few games due to an injury. The 35-year-old comes in for left-arm spin bowler Harpreet Brar.
Punjab Kings had lost the first qualifier against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Mumbai, on the other hand, beat Gujarat Titans in a high-scoring encounter. The winner of the game will play RCB in the finals of the IPL 2025 season. The last time these two sides met was in Jaipur, where PBKS went on to win the game.
All eyes on Rohit Sharma and Jonny Bairstow
Former PBKS batter Jonny Bairstow will be looking for some revenge when he comes out to bat. Bairstow, signed as a short-term replacement, scored a quick-fire 47 in the last match to give MI a great start. Rohit Sharma scored 50-ball 81 to help MI reach 228 and also win the player of the game.
Speaking at the toss, Shreyas Iyer said that the overcast conditions were the reason behind his move to bowl first. Iyer also said that his team was looking forward to the challenge after the huge loss in the last game against RCB, where their batting collapsed. The 30-year-old also revealed that PBKS’ players were in good spirits and the feeling in the dressing room was good.
Hardik Pandya also said that he wanted to bowl first, considering that the conditions could favor the bowlers. Pandya, who was the former GT skipper, said that the pitch had gone flat over the years. MI skipper also said, “If you bowl well, fast bowlers tend to get some help. At the same point of time, if you bat well, you can score a lot of runs. There are a lot of areas where we could have gotten better in the last game.”
