The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is looking for a new head coach for the Indian Cricket Team and a perfect replacement for the current coach, Rahul Dravid. While the applications were out a long time ago, the deadline for the same is May 27. Post that, the board will not accept any applications from anyone.
While the list of contenders isn't made official yet, as per reports, VVS Laxman, Gautam Gambhir, Ricky Ponting, Justin Langer, Stephen Fleming, and some more were approached by the Board. In addition, Gautam Gambhir remains in the top position. According to reports by Dainik Jagaran, Gambhir has 'one condition' before applying for the post. The former India batter and the current KKR mentor will apply only if he's given a 'selection guarantee.' He isn't interested in just being a mere candidate.
Another concern for Gambhir might be his position in the KKR's dugout. If selected for the position, he'll have to let go of his current role as a mentor in the KKR team, which seems quite important. He did give up his political career to become KKR's mentor. Hence, he wouldn't want to let that go away. Since nothing is made official yet and all the information is based on reports, we'll have to wait for an official confirmation from the Board.
BCCI secretary Jay Shah has denied all claims and reports of approaching Australian coaches in the likes of Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer. While both of them are quite good and experienced, Shah said they are looking for someone who knows the Indian roots before getting involved with the team.
"Neither I nor the BCCI have approached any former Australian cricketer with a coaching offer. The reports circulating in certain media sections are completely incorrect. It’s crucial that our coach has an in-depth knowledge of our domestic cricket framework to truly elevate Team India to the next level," said Jay Shah.
