After 7 long years, the Hong Cricket Sixes tournament is set to be played. The tournament will begin on 1st November and end on 3rd November. 12 teams will take part with India confirming their participation on Monday. Pakistan have already announced their team with Faheem Ashraf leading the side.

The first edition of the tournament was played in 1993 and England won the title. The English side also went on to win the tournament the next year in 1994 while South Africa were the winner in 1995.

India’s only title win in the tournament came in 2005 when they beat West Indies in the finals. South Africa and England are the most successful teams in this format having won five titles each. Pakistan have won the tournament four teams as India, Sri Lanka, West Indies, and Australia have won it once.

What are the rules of the Hong Kong Sixes tournament?

The rules of the tournament are pretty simple. Each team will have six players including one wicketkeeper. Each league phase match will be played in the five-over format. Conventional cricket rules of 6 balls per side will be applicable during the league phase format.

The final game of the tournament will have 8 balls per side and the game will be five per side. Barring the wicketkeeper each and every player has to bowl. Each player will be allowed to deliver just one over per game.

Once a batter reaches the score of 30 he has to retire out. The batter who gets retired out can come back into bat later if all the wickets have fallen. The retired batter can also come into bat if the other batters have also retired out.

If a team has lost its five wickets before the stipulated end of 30 balls, the unbeaten player can bat on. Runner duties will be performed by the batter who was last dismissed. The batter who is not out will retain strike irrespective of whether even a single run is taken. Once the not-out batter is out it will signal the end of the innings.

In case of wides and no-balls, two runs will be awarded to the batting team. In conventional cricket, just one run is awarded in such a scenario. The team winning the game get two points and the top two teams from each group will move to the semi-finals.

This is the first edition that 12 teams will play in the tournament. Each team will have to play five games and hope to finish in the top two to make it to the knockout phase. Apart from the main tournament, there is also the plate tournament where teams finishing between 5th to 8th as per the old rules could take the plate title.

What could be India’s prospective squad for Hong Kong Sixes 2024?

As per the rules, each team has to name 7 members in the squad. Expect the men in blue to name some of their best white ball talents to take part in the series. This will be a good exposure for some of the players who
