Former Indian batter Subramanium Badrinath lashes out at the young batter Shubman Gill over his poor form during the Australian series. The 25-year-old missed out on the first Test match of the series due to injury. Gill was picked for the next two games in Adelaide and Brisbane but he failed to perform with the bat.
The young batter was controversially benched for the fourth Test match of the series played at the MCG. Team India then got Gill back into the team in place of Rohit Sharma who had opted to sit out. In both innings the young batter played rash shots to be dismissed.
During his chat on Star Sports Tamil Channel, Badrinath said, “It is very difficult for me to see this. For that level, he has not lived up to expectations. You can get runs, you cannot, but there should have been intent and aggression. I wanted him to tire out the bowlers."
Badrinath raises questions on Gill’s form
The former Indian batter went onto add, “I want you to make the ball old. Help your teammates and stand firm even if runs are not coming. Play 100 balls, tire the bowlers. This is what your team contribution is supposed to be. Labuschange and McSweeney did that in a couple of games. By playing out a lot of dot balls, they had actually made Bumrah injured. If this was Shubman Gill from Tamil Nadu, he would have been dropped.”
Badrinath went onto opine, “You must not go there and say, oh, this is the way I play. I will stand and deliver. Four people will write about it. Whatever you can do, at that time, you try and do”. Shubman Gill had made his Test debut at the MCG in 2020 and four years later his Test future has been called out.
The 43-year-old ended by saying, “In this series, I did not get it from Shubman. Even on the field, he was poor. He couldn't stay in slip and point. What does he contribute to the team?”. The 25-year-old scored 93 runs from five innings with the best of 31 and average of 18.6
