Former Indian batting legend Virender Sehwag has paid wholesome compliment to Rohit Sharma and his captaincy. The 46-year-old made these comments when he was chatting with CRICBUZZ after India won the 2025 Champions Trophy. With this win Rohit Sharma has now achieved two global titles in a span of nine months.
Sehwag said, “We underrate his captaincy, but after these two trophies, he became the second Indian captain after MS Dhoni to win multiple ICC titles. The way the captain has used his bowlers, the way he has handled the team, the way he has guided the team, and whatever communication he does, he does it very clearly.”
The 46-year-old also said, “Whether it’s playing Harshit Rana first ahead of Arshdeep Singh or then bringing in Varun Chakravarty in place of Harshit Rana, he has done good communication with his players, and that was important. That’s why Rohit Sharma is a better captain."
‘He doesn’t let any feel insecure’ – Virender Sehwag on Rohit Sharma
Ever since Virat Kohli stepped down as the captain, the onus of leading the side has fallen on Rohit Sharma. The 37-year-old led India to two finals in 2023 and on each occasion lost to Australia in the WTC and ODI World Cup tournaments. India’s wait for an ICC title was finally ended when Rohit led the side to title win in the 2024 T20 World Cup.
The latest Champions Trophy title win was India’s third ever in the tournament’s history which is the most for any side. The last time, the Men in Blue had won the title was in 2013 in England beating the hosts in the finals under MS Dhoni. With these two title wins there are hopes that Rohit and his side can end the wait for an ODI World title as well.
Speaking on CRICBUZZ, former India opener Sehwag revealed the biggest strength in Rohit’s captaincy and said, “He thinks less about himself, more about his team, his teammates. He makes them comfortable. He realises that if a player has insecurity, then his performance will not come. That’s why he doesn’t let anyone feel insecure in that team. He takes everyone with him. This is the need for a better captain and leader. And Rohit Sharma is doing it very well."
