'We are working closely with the host countries...' - ICC reacts to terror threats during T20 World Cup 2024

In the wake of a terror threat to the major event, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has stated that it is closely collaborating with the West Indies and the United States, which are the hosting nations for the Men's T20 World Cup, to ensure the necessary preparations are made. 

"ICC is working closely with the host countries to ensure appropriate plans are in place. We immediately spoke to the authorities as the reports emerged, and the Cricket West Indies has assured everyone that a comprehensive security plan is in place to address any risk," an ICC official told IANS.

The men's T20 World Cup is planned for June 1–29 in the USA and the West Indies. There have been reports from different sectors of the Caribbean media indicating that a group in North Pakistan has threatened to carry out terrorist activities against the islands that are hosting the World Cup. 

Format of T20 World Cup 2024

For the first round of the T20 World Cup 2024, 20 teams will be split into four groups of five. Each group's top two teams advance to the Super 8 stage. Teams will be divided into two groups of four for the Super 8. If they qualify, the teams ranked first and second in their groups from the first round will continue to be seeded that way in the Super Eight. 

Finishers A1, B2, C1, and D2 will be placed in one group, and finishers A2, B1, C2, and D1 will be placed in another group. The top two teams from each of the Super 8's two groups will move on to the semifinals. The semifinals will take place on June 26 and 27, respectively, in Trinidad & Tobago and Guyana. Barbados will host the championship match on June 29. There are reserve days for the semifinals and championship games.
