Former India skipper Virat Kohli cut an emotional figure after his early dismissal during the final day of the MCG Test match. The 36-year-old was out for just 5 runs off 29 balls when he was caught in the slips by Usman Khawaja. Fast bowler Mitchell Starc took the key wicket of Kohli before lunch to leave India tottering at 33/3.
This is the final time Virat Kohli is playing a Test series in Australia along with Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja. Once he made his long walk back to the pavilion, wife Anushka Sharma was seen sitting in the grand box. Anushka, had a shocked look on her face flanked by KL Rahul’s wife Athiya Shetty.
Earlier the pair were seen in silence post the fall of KL Rahul for a duck. The 32-year-old scored a duck after facing four balls. Pat Cummins’ perfect ball saw Rahul tentatively play at the delivery only to offer Khawaja an easy grab. In the same over, Cummins had also dismissed Rohit Sharma for 9 to give India an early jolt.
Massive chance for India duo to redeem themselves
Jasprit Bumrah claimed his third fifer of the series when he got the wicket of Nathan Lyon. This also was his 30th scalp of the series to leave India with the task of chasing 340 to win. After the loss of three wickets, Australian bowlers continued to exert pressure on Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant just after lunch.
The onus of saving the game will be riding on the duo’s shoulder. Jaiswal had scored 82 in the first innings before he was run-out post a mix-up with Kohli. The young batter had turned 23 on day three of the MCG Test and will look to score big again. 2024 has been a great year for Jaiswal in the Test format with over 1000 runs.
Rishabh Pant on the other hand has a chance to answer his critics after his horrible shot in the first innings. Pant had scored 28 runs before falling to Scott Boland while trying to play the falling scoop shot. This annoyed Sunil Gavaskar to no ends as he lashed out at the shot by played by Indian wicketkeeper.
