The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 hasn’t been short of drama and the latest point of controversy happened during the Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Rajasthan Royals game on Thursday. Travis Head was given a huge reprieve as there was a massive howler being committed by the umpires.
The incident happened in the 3rd ball of the 15th over with Avesh Khan bowling to Travis Head. The Aussie came down the track in order to hit the ball and Sanju Samson threw the ball towards the stumps. The Royals skipper was quick to go up and ask the officials to check for a possible run-out.
The replays clearly showed that the batter hadn’t grounded his bat. The third umpire though decided to give Travis Head not out much to the chagrin of the Royals players. Kumar Sangakkara could be clearly seen protesting with the umpires in the dugout.
Massive umpiring blunder yet again
Sanju Samson and the rest of the Royals team couldn’t believe their eyes when Travis Head was given not out. The bat was clearly in the air even the commentators could be heard gasping in disbelief at what had transpired.
There have been many occasions this season where the umpiring has been called out. The latest incident will seriously force the powers to be to re-think about the standards of umpiring in a tournament like the IPL.
Earlier in the day it was Pat Cummins who won the toss and chose to bat first. Avesh Khan got the first wicket of the day when he had the wicket of Abhishek Sharma for 12. Anmolpreet Singh continued his bad form with the bat as he offered Yashasvi Jaiswal a simple catch to be dismissed by Sandeep Sharma for 5.
Travis Head found good support from Nitish Kumar Reddy as the two batters added 96 runs for the third wicket. Avesh Khan didn’t let the controversy affect him much as he got the prized scalp of the Aussie batter the very next ball.
Nitish Kumar Reddy though didn’t stop as he scored his second IPL fifty to keep the runs flowing. SRH need a win to keep their top-four hopes alive after losing two games in a row to find themselves in trouble.
