Gujarat Titans skipper and opener Shubman Gill finally woke up and played a blinder of a knock at home against Chennai Super Kings. The 24-year-old, who had scored 3 centuries last year, was struggling for form this year during the early phase of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season.

With his side rooted 10th in the table, Shubman Gill picked the right game to make a massive statement. The right-handed batter displayed aggression right from the start and made sure he played delightful shots to all parts of the ground.

Once he reached his ton, Shubman Gill removed his helmet and celebrated wildly. The rest of the players in the dugout stood up and applauded their skipper for the valiant effort with the bat.

Gujarat Titans post huge score thanks to their openers

Ruturaj Gaikwad won the toss and chose to bowl first and saw the home team post a huge total on the board. Chennai Super Kings could only watch as Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill both scored superb centuries for their team. The opening pair also recorded the joint-best first wicket stand as the Titans scored 231/3 from their 20 overs.

Sudharsan, who had scored a valiant 96 when the two sides met last year during IPL 2023 finals, was aggressive right from the start. The left-handed batter combined classical shots with innovation to make sure that the Chennai Super Kings fielders were on their toes.

None of the bowlers were spared as the left and right-hand combination took full toll on some loose bowling by the CSK players. Shubman Gill was the first to reach the three-figure mark and the capacity crowd at the Narendra Modi Stadium stood up to applaud their skipper.

Sai Sudharsan then reached his century with a six and was more subdued in his celebration. The left-handed batter then became the first player to be dismissed when he was out for 103 runs off 51 balls with 5 fours and 7 sixes. Shubman Gill too fell soon after scoring 104 runs from 55 balls with 9 fours and 6 sixes.

Chennai Super Kings are currently 4th in the table with 12 points a loss on Friday will severely dent their chances of making it to the playoffs. Kartik Tyagi the former Under-19 pacer is making his debut for Gujarat Titans while Rachin Ravindra has made his comeback to the CSK side.
