Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) batters got off to a great start in their chase of 246 to win in the IPL 2025 game against Punjab Kings (PBKS). In the second ball of the fifth over, which was bowled by Glenn Maxwell, there was a huge appeal against Travis Head. Even before Shreyas Iyer could make up his mind about the DRS, bowler Glenn Maxwell was quick to signal for it. Interestingly, the umpire called it a wide delivery.
The umpire had no hesitation in sending the decision upstairs to the third umpire. This move didn’t sit well with Iyer, who was seen telling his teammates, “Mujhse Poocho” (Ask me). Maxwell went. The replays also confirmed that there was no bat involved, however, the ball brushed the thigh pad of the bowel,r after which the umpire had to reverse his decision of wide ball.
Earlier in the day, PBKS batted first after winning the toss and scored 245 runs from their 20 overs. Shreyas Iyer was the best batter for Punjab with his knock of 82 which came off 36 balls. Marcus Stoinis scored a brisk 11-ball 34 not out as he hit veteran seamer Mohammed Shami for four successive sixes in the final over.
Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head power SRH to brisk start
Chasing a massive 246 runs to win, Travis Head began the assault with nine runs off the first over bowled by Arshdeep Singh. The left-arm seamer was hit for two fours in the first over by the Aussie star. Marco Jansen was entrusted with the task of bowling the second over and the South African bowled was hit for 19 runs which included four boundaries by Abhishek Sharma.
The third over of the innings bowled by Arshdeep saw 12 runs being scored as Head hit the pacer for three successive boundaries. Impact player Yash Thakur was then drafted into bowl the fourth over and Abhishek Sharma welcomed the Vidarbha pacer with a four and followed it up with a six.
In the fourth ball of the over, Thakur got the wicket of Sharma but much to the shock of PBKS players it was a no-ball. Abhishek Sharma then hit the resulting free-hit for a six as 20 runs came off the over to leave Hyderabad’s score at 60 for no loss after four. The introduction of Maxwell didn’t change the tempo of SRH’s batting as Sharma hit the Aussie bowler for two more sixes.
Lockie Ferguson was brought into bowl the final over before the powerplay. The Kiwi pacer hobbled off the field injured. Stoinis completed the over and gave away just six runs as SRH scored 83 from the first six over. Sharma reached his fifty off just 19 balls when he hit Maxwell for a boundary in the first ball of the seventh over.
