For the second day in a row, the Major League Cricket (MLC) 2025 season saw yet another game go down to the wire. Seattle Orcas, who hadn’t managed to win any game so far this campaign, chased down the 238-run target set by MI New York. Shimron Hetmyer was the man of the match for his unbeaten knock of 97. The West Indian batter who had been undergoing a terrible time with the bat finally came back to great form and proved to be the match winner.
Orcas needed nine runs from the last over, which was bowled by Kieron Pollard. The first two deliveries were dot balls and Jasdeep Singh finally took a single to make it eight needed from three balls. Pollard’s slower ball bouncer then deceived Hetmyer as yet another dot ball made it eight needed from two balls. In the fifth ball of the over, Hetmyer took two runs to make it six needed from the last ball.
Pollard delivered a half volley on the leg stump and Hetmyer went down on his knees to swing the ball deep into the stands. The ball went soaring over the fine leg region for a six as the Orcas players came storming on the pitch. Mark Boucher, coach of the MINY side, could look on in despair as his side lost yet another encounter. Hetmyer scored his 97 off just 40 balls with five boundaries and nine sixes.
Nicholas Pooran’s knock goes in vain.
Earlier in the day, Orcas’ new skipper Sikandar Raza won the toss and opted to bowl. Coach Matthew Mott and skipper Heinrich Klaasen decided to step down after the dismal start to the season. MINY posted 237 runs on the board thanks to captain Nicholas Pooran’s 108, which came off 60 balls with seven boundaries and eight sixes. Tajinder Dhillon was the second-best scorer with 95 off 35 balls as the pair added 158 runs for the third wicket.
In reply, Orcas lost the wickets of Josh Brown and Shayan Jahangir early. Kyle Mayers (37) and Sikandar Raza (30) helped Seattle get their chase back on track. Former skipper Heinrich Klaasen scored 13 off 26 balls as Shimron Hetmyer came into bat and helped his side. MINY got the wickets of Gerald Coetzee and Sujit Nayak in quick succession before Hetmyer took charge.
