Former Australian star Shane Warne would have turned 55 years old on Friday. On 4th March 2022, the world lost two great cricketers in form of Rodney Marsh and Shane Warne. The former Australian spin legend was holidaying when he suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away. 

Ever since he made his international debut in 1992 till his final ever game over two decades later, Warne was a legend in the game. By the time he ended his career in early 2007, Shane Warne ended with 708 Test wickets and is still the 2nd best bowler in the world. 

The career of the former Australian spin legend is filled with moments that is both celebrated and controversial. The likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara have always rated the leg-spin legend from Victoria as one of the best bowlers they have faced. 

Here are the top 5 cricketing moments from Shane Warne’s career:

5. Fight with Marlon Samuels in Big Bash League 

During a season of the Big Bash League, former West Indian player Marlon Samuels and Shane Warne nearly came to blows. Earlier in the day, Samuels tried to stop David Hussey from taking a second run by holding his shirt. The football move wasn’t appreciated by the fans or by Shane Warne. 

The Melbourne derby between the Renegades and Stars had got heated up. When Warne bowled to Samuels the Stars skipper could be heard on the mic saying, “Come on Marlon, You want to grab some people?” This was followed by Warne using the F Word as the Mic died down. 

The two players could be seen having a tense moment. More drama followed as Marlon Samuels fended a short ball and Warne came running in and threw the ball at the batter. The West Indian responded by throwing his bat on the pitch just meters away from the Aussie legend.  

4. Telling everyone how he will dismiss Brendon McCullum

Former Kiwi skipper Brendon McCullum was one of the most feared batters in the world. In his very first game in the IPL he scored 158 and soon became a known face in T20 cricket. This earned McCullum a contract withy Brisbane Heat who once took on the Melbourne Stars that had Shane Warne. 

Brendon McCullum was batting on 38 off 24 balls with the Heat’s score reading 85/2 in the 10th over. Warner was asked what he had in mind for the Kiwi to which the Aussie replied “Let me try to shake the sweep after the first one or even the inside-out again much harder so tying to slide one in”. 

What followed was magic as Warne bowled a perfect ball to induce a sweep from McCullum. The Kiwi saw the ball hit the stumps as he was done in around his legs thanks in what will Shane Warne’s top cricket moments. 

3. Rivalry with Sachin Tendulkar 

When Indian star Sachin Tendulkar coming into his own, Shane Warne was also finding his feet. The Indian tour of 1998 saw the experts make it a Tendulkar vs Warne battle. In the Sachin Tendulkar came out on top as he smashed two centuries from two Tests. This was followed by two successive centuries in Sharjah during the Tri-series. 

The biggest moment of the Tendulkar vs Warne rivalry happened during the 2001 Test in Chennai. Bowling from round the wicket the Aussie star bowled a bounce that Sachin Tendulkar cut over the slip region for a boundary. India won the game to complete a massive comeback as the two sides played a memorable series. 

2. Game changing spell during 1999 WC Semi-Finals vs South Africa

After a thrilling game in Leeds between South Africa and Australia, the two sides met again in Birmingham. Steve Waugh and his men batted first and were bowled out for 213 with Michael Bevan and Steve Waugh scoring fifties. 

South Africa had to win the game to make it to their first ever ODI World Cup finals. Herschelle Gibbs and Gary Kirsten began well as the South African openers added 48 runs for the first wicket. 

The introduction of Shane Warne changed the game as the Aussie first bowled a terrific ball to dismiss Gibbs for 30. This was followed by Warne going past the defence of Kirsten for 18. The 3rd wicket came when Hansie Cronje was caught by Mark Waugh at silly point for a duck. The final wicket was that of Jacques Kallis who was caught Steve Waugh for 53 as Shane Warne was given the player of the match. 

1. ‘Ball of the Century’ to Mike Gatting 

Shane Warne announced his arrival to the world with just one delivery that had a long lasting effect on England. During the opening game of the 1993 Ashes series, Allan Border threw the ball to the young spinner. What happened next was one of Shane Warne’s top cricketing moments. 

Mike Gatting was facing the youngster for the first time and what followed was completely magical. The ball pitched outside the leg stump and span away from Gatting who played a forward defence. The ball turned away and hit the top of the off stump as Ian Healy jumped in joy. This was called the ‘Ball of the Century’ and made Shane Warne the player he became.
