Ben Stokes won the toss at Leeds in the first of the five-Test matches and opted to bowl first. Shubman Gill was leading the side for the first time as the likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin weren’t part of the Test side for the first time in a decade. Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar took huge swipe at Virat Kohli in the pre-lunch session on the opening day of the game.
KL Rahul had gotten off to a good start with Yashasvi Jaiswal as the Indian batters put the English bowlers under pressure. The home team bowlers tempted the Indian batters with deliveries outside the off stump that both the openers let go. That’s when Manjrekar was heard saying “We know of a former batter who would have gone after that delivery and gotten himself into trouble”
Once the statement was made social media was abuzz as many fans went after the former India batter. Virat Kohli it is to be noted had the penchant to fish outside the off-stump as it was seen during the Australia tour. India’s former skipper was out eight times caught behind the wicket.
England bowlers dent India before lunch
Coming to the game, India were asked to bat first by England and the two teams went into lunch at 92 for two in the 26th over. Sai Sudharsan was given his debut cap by veteran batter Cheteshwar Pujara who is in England for commentary duties. Yashasvi Jaiswal started well as he set the tone with some crisp boundaries.
KL Rahul soon joined suit as the veteran batter brought some amazing drives to frustrate Ben Stokes. In the second ball of the 13th over, England wasted a review as they challenged a not-out call against Jaiswal who was batting on 23. Indian openers brought up the fifty run-stand in the final ball of the 15th over.
Just before the lunch break, KL Rahul slashed at a ball wide outside the off stump and Joe Root took the catch. Rahul was out after scoring 42 runs from 78 balls as Brydon Carse got his first wicket of the game. Sai Sudharsan then was snapped by Ben Stokes for a duck with Jamie Smith completing the catch to give England huge momentum before the break on the opening day.
